For more than 30 years, October has been the month for national breast cancer awareness. And due to the increase of awareness over time, the death rate of breast cancer has decreased.

One crucial step to surviving breast cancer is through early detection. At St. Joseph’s Medical Center here in Lewiston, they have an imaging center that offers the latest technology mammograms.

According to the National Breast Cancer Foundation, the first important thing about breast cancer awareness is learning the signs and symptoms, which most people do not know because they can be invisible and hard to detect.

The easiest way to identify a sign is by self-examining any lumps or abnormalities in your breast, and if anything is found, even if you’re not sure, talk to your health care provider for further examination.
